How The Reading Clinic Came To Be
The Reading Clinic was founded by the most unlikely person to start a business related to reading. Our story begins with a little girl who grew up on the outskirts of Las Vegas who struggled with reading. Angelique attended a public school with a whopping fifty-four registered students. It was so small that second, third and fourth grade were all assigned to a single classroom. With two teachers who thought teaching comprised of a weekly packet of worksheets, which were thrown out more often than graded, she found herself in a hopeless educational situation. Little Miss Angelique desperately needed two things: a good teacher and for reading to be taught a different way.
Angelique could not wrap her mind around how letters functioned. She had no idea how letters turned into words, how those words turned into a sentence and how those sentences then turned into a story. Day after day, one school day to the next, she slipped further and further into dislike for school, learning and the detest of reading. She couldn’t escape it either; reading was everywhere! Though she detested reading, she loved books. The pages, the smell, the pictures, the feel of it in her hands. She would place books under her pillow and at night would pray to God that in the morning she would be able to read.
Thankfully, God had sent this little girl her very own superhero for this particular predicament; her mother. In hopes of changing her daughter’s outlook toward school, learning and most importantly reading, Angelique’s mother at the age of thirty-four applied for student loans, scholarships and every grant possible so that she could enroll at UNLV to become an elementary school teacher. Her mother worked with her relentlessly, day after day, until her daughter was caught up and able to fly on her own.
Fast forward to high school, that same little girl who struggled so much with the fundamentals of reading found herself graduating at the top of her class with two degrees: a high school diploma and an Associates of Arts degree. Two years later, at the age of 20, she earned her Bachelors of Education, at 22 years old received her Masters of Education, and at 25 received her certification in Educational Therapy. As impressive as these accomplishments are, they did not come easily to her. Each day was an uphill battle that needed to be fought.
Which leads me to why we are here today. The Reading Clinic was founded by the most unlikely person because the founder undoubtedly knows the importance of two things: a good teacher and the importance of reading. Through her 19 years of working with elementary and middle school students, encountering every learning struggle from a variety of backgrounds and situations, she developed her own teaching system and reading program. With her specialized approach to reading, she has yet to come across a single child that she has not been able to teach to read. The founder of The Reading Clinic gets it, she fought the battle and won. Now Ms. Angelique has dedicated her life to teaching every struggling reader to become a Reading Warrior.
